Mixed Media - Claire Ongley

I am currently a student at Leeds Metropolitan University doing a Fine Art degree. I like to work using a broad range of media and techniques in various disciplines. Most recently my main focus in my practical work is portraiture. I am interested in drawing portraits of people’s faces using mainly pencil. The faces of older people initially captured my attention, allowing my work to have great detail and contrast due to the interesting wrinkles and shadows in the faces. I have used images from the Internet of elderly people as my resource and also some family photographs to work from.

The principal aim of my work is to simply capture the persons face in a monumental manor, composed in a striking and bold way.

Chuck Close's super realistic paintings intrigue me, encouraging me to achieve my own sense of ‘perfection’, Closes’ monstrous scale is another aspect that I’m interested in. Other artists who have come to my attention who I feel are appropriate are Alison Lambert, John Coplans, and Alberto Giacometti. Each artist has a sense of shown monumentality.
